Executive Cars Past and Present

Executive cars first arrived on British roads in the 1960’s, or at least the term used to describe them did.

Generally considered to be markers of status for aspirational individuals they were targeted at middle and senior management professionals who were looking for vehicles with high levels of performance and comfort.

Traditionally, executive cars tend to be 4 door saloons, however, many manufacturers such as Saab began to offer estate versions for increased load space and versatility in line with the growing needs of the modern family.

The executive car sector has generally been popular with fleet buyers and company car users. Today, many fleet managers choose to manage executive cars on lease as a cost effective and efficient way to manage their vehicles.

German Executive cars

The Germans know a thing or to about making executive cars. Offerings from BMW, Mercedes and Audi are some of the most popular available on both sides of the Atlantic. Obere Mittelklasse as it is known in Germany can be literally translated as ‘upper middle class’ and refers to models such as the Audi A6, and Mercedes Benz CL-Class.

Below this, Mittelklasse, or ‘middle class’ refers to cars, which here in Britain are known as ‘compact executives’ this category includes cars such as the BMW 3 Series, Volkswagen Passat and Audi A4.

French Executive Cars

In France, the category ‘Grande Routiere’ refers to class of vehicles which are comfortable on long journeys. Traditionally, French car makers are renowned for their technological innovation. Today’s offerings such as the Renault Vel Satis and the Citroen C6 continue this tradition of style and innovation and are the ideal choice for people who want to avoid the status quo.

Swedish Executive Cars

Swedish cars are very well thought of for their reliability and high levels of safety. They also offer exceptional levels of comfort and refinement, all of the qualities one would expect in an executive car. Saab’s 9-3 and Volvo’s S60 both sit comfortably in the compact executive category.

The Luxury Of The Volvo 740

When someone says Volvo, the image of both safety and power come to mind. Volvo has developed a solid reputation for these characteristics. However, many of you may not know where and how the company began.

The original Volvo Company was started in Sweden in 1927. “Safety cage and crumple zones” was their motto and this sparked the interest of consumers who were in their 60’s. As now, back then their focus was on the security and safety of all their passengers.

In 1998, Volvo was acquired by the Ford Motor Company to become a member of its Premier Automotive Group. That has proved to be a great investment for Ford.

One of Volvo’s vehicles, the Volvo 740, which was produced from 1984 up until 1992, was said to have a lifespan of a decade. Over the years Volvo has actually been powered by many different engines, such as the four-cylinder in-line OHC, 986 cc or 2,316 cc, six-cylinder in-line 2,383 cc Turbo Diesel.

In 1985 the Volvo 740 SE was introduced. It had fewer options as compared to the Volvo 740 model. But it was a great start for the Swedish manufacturer since it was actually supposed to be a midsize car that offered more style, performance and overall luxury. It had been offered as a four door sedan; initially it was known as the 744. And the five-door wagon was known as the 745. Though production stopped in 1992, the older models were useful. They provided engineering information as well as components, such as the vehicle’s engine, transmission, chassis and many other important parts. This was used when the Volvo 940 was being built.

If you own a Volvo I don’t have to convince you about its luxury and style. You already know how great it is. Now you just know where Volvo started out and how they have successfully changed over the years.

Volvo Group: Aiming At Reducing Traffic Accidents

To increase awareness when it comes to traffic safety issues. To reduce the number of accidents in humanitarian aid transports. These are just two of the main aims and goals of the Volvo Group. You see, the Volvo Group is currently initiating cooperation along with forty other humanitarian aid organizations around the globe so as to be able to make these aims become reality. To assist with this endeavor, Volvo’s own accident research team would also be contributing and providing more information to help out with the analysis.

A declaration of intent was signed by Volvo. Now this declaration of intent actually includes cooperation in the whole area of road safety with Fleet Forum. Fleet Forum is actually a voluntary association of around forty humanitarian aid organizations worldwide. Part of the terms and conditions included and stated in the declaration of intent, Volvo would also be there to assist out these organizations in analyzing traffic accidents and recommend measures to increase general road safety awareness of traffic safety issues. They would also be working on reducing the number of accidents and save more lives along the way.

To further facilitate the whole process, these humanitarian aid organizations will be provided with customized data sheets. These data sheets would help them out in reporting traffic accidents. The whole collection of data process will start around the middle of this year, 2006. The first report on their study would be presented next year. After every little piece of information has been submitted and collected, Volvo’s own accident research team would them do the hard work. They would be analyzing the causes of accidents. Of course, they would also try to formulate new ideas and provide recommendations as per measures and steps to reduce the number of accidents. This whole project would be continuously done up until the year 2009.
